The fastest half marathons in Europe for a personal best
Updated
Elevation and weather tell you part of the story, but a course can be flat and still slow: tight turns, narrow streets, cobbles, wind along the sea or a crowded start all cost time, and none of them shows up in a profile. The most reliable sign of a fast race is how fast people actually run it.
So this list ranks European road half marathons by their results: the average finish time of the 10 fastest men aged 40–49 over the last editions. Using one age group gives every race the same yardstick, and that group is large at almost every race. Climb and usual start temperature are shown for context.

What makes a half marathon fast
The course, not just the climb
Fast courses are flat, but also straight and wide: long avenues with few sharp corners, a smooth surface and room to run your own pace from the start. Every tight turn or narrow section forces a slow-down and a surge.
Around 7–10°C is ideal
Cool air lets you hold your pace for longer. Over a half marathon the effect is smaller than in a full marathon, but it is still real: a warm, humid morning can cost a minute or more.
Size helps, up to a point
Bigger races give you groups to run with and often pacers, but very large fields can mean a slow first kilometre. Start in the right wave and be patient early.
