World Marathon Majors: dates and how to get in

The World Marathon Majors are the most famous road marathons in the world, and runners who finish all of them earn the Six Star Medal. They are also among the hardest races to get into.

Upcoming dates

Dates marked “est.” follow each race’s usual calendar slot and are not yet confirmed by the organizer.

Ways to get a place

Ballot (lottery)

Most Majors run a public ballot months in advance. Demand far exceeds supply, so your chances in any one year are low. Enter several ballots and be flexible about the year.

Qualifying time

Boston is the classic qualifying race, and several others reserve places for runners under age-group time standards. Standards and how many places they give change from year to year, so always check the current rules.

Charity places

Every Major works with charities that offer guaranteed entries in return for a fundraising commitment. It is the most reliable route if you missed the ballot.

Tour operators

Official international tour operators sell travel packages that include a race entry. They cost more, but they solve entry and accommodation in one go.
