How to choose a marathon abroad: a practical checklist

Updated

A marathon abroad combines two big projects: months of training and a trip. Picking the right race makes both easier. Work through these questions before you enter.

1. What do you want from the race?

A personal best, a bucket-list experience and a first marathon call for different races. For a fast time, look for a flat course and cool weather (see the best marathons for a PB). For an experience, big-city races and scenic courses matter more than the clock. For a first marathon, a mid-sized race with a generous cut-off takes the pressure off.

2. When is it, and what is the weather usually like?

Check the race date against your training: most plans run 16 to 20 weeks. Then check the typical race-day weather, not just the climate of the month. A 9 am start in a warm city can be very different from a 7 am start. Every race page on iRun42 shows 10 years of historical weather for race day.

3. How hilly is the course?

Total elevation gain tells you how much climbing there is. Under about 100 m is flat; several hundred metres will cost most runners minutes. Look at where the climbs fall, too: a hill at 35 km hurts more than one at 5 km.

4. Can you actually get in?

Popular races use lotteries, qualifying times or both, and some sell out within hours. Note the registration date in your calendar, and check whether charity places or official tour operators offer a guaranteed entry.

5. What will the whole trip cost?

The entry fee is often the smallest part. Add flights, two or three nights near the start (prices rise on race weekend, so book early, ideally with free cancellation), local transport and food. Smaller races in less-visited cities can be far cheaper overall.

6. Read the rules

Many races ask foreign runners for a medical certificate, and some require it in a specific format. Check the cut-off time, bag drop, and whether the start is a long way from the finish.
